“All you did was stick some handles on”
Yes! We stick some handles on, but that’s just 10% of the process. Many assume that up-cycling is very simple and involves adding minor details to a product however, the process is definitely easier said than done. Like anything else within design, up-cycling doesn’t just come with the final product but concepts and development work goes into it. From the initial stage of buying a product, design ideas start flowing and there are so many possibilities for one item which then have to be condensed into one solid idea.
Knowing the function and purpose of the item and testing and choosing the right finishes is very important to achieve the ideal up-cycled product and this all takes time. While up-cycling we’re also ensuring that the materials used are durable and are valuable.
As seen on the ‘before’ photo above the chair was stained and looking very shabby, this item could not possibly be placed into a space and be seen as a ‘wow’ product, in fact it would let the whole space down. This is why the purpose, function and concepts are very important. The colour scheme chosen has to compliment the space the item is going into and as this was the case with this chair. The project had specific shades for the space, this involved bold/blue tones and gold accents and this what was replicated within the concept of the chair.
So yes, the fabric of the chair and legs may appear to be the only thing done but a lot went into making sure this chair gave you the ‘wow’ factor.
Does it give you that? Let us Know.
